In 2018, Miroslaw Wawak journeyed to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard and the remote island of Jan Mayen—two of the world’s most far-flung destinations north of the Arctic Circle. In Svalbard, he explored the polar frontier, where reindeer roam freely and the midnight sun or polar night dictates the pace of life. Glaciers creaked in the distance, and the threat of polar bears made even a simple walk into the wilderness feel adventurous. Jan Mayen, even more isolated, revealed an untouched volcanic island rarely visited by outsiders. These destinations challenged his concept of travel, reminding him that even in the most remote regions, nature writes the most powerful stories.
